One of Stewart’s appearances on the Crosby show came on November 14, 1951. Bing’s show was well established, so the radio section of the newspapers didn’t have much to say about the appearance. Most were like this one from the Mt. Vernon Register, Mt. Vernon, IL:
The Stewart’s twins, Judy and Kelly, had just been born and Bing questions Jimmy about the girls. The conversation soon turns to Christmas and Jimmy admits that he has come on the show to ask Bing to help him shop for a Christmas present for Gloria. Soon, they’re off to Fiffie’s Florescent Flimsies, Limited. Fiffie is played by Veola Vonn.
Unfortunately, the only available copy of this program has a speed and flutter problem. This is especially annoying on the songs by Bing and guest, Anna Maria Alberghetti. Because of this, the show has been edited into two audio clips. One features just the Stewart spot through the end of the program, while the other has the show’s opening and the bulk of the songs. We’ll start off with the beginning of the program. If you find the tape problems offending to your ears, skip it.
In the Stewart segment of the show, Jimmy really shows off his comedy abilities. The sketch is very amusing and you’ll no doubt find yourself laughing out loud. Don’t stop listening at the end of the sketch as Stewart will have a few more lines elsewhere before the end of the show. We’ve also included the script pages for this segment so you can follow along and see just how closely they followed what was written for them. If you’d like to read the entire script you can find it at the Truth Tobacco Industry Documents on the University of California, San Francisco website.
