This particular Bob Hope Show was actually a composite of new material and previously aired segments. Several newspaper listings called it a repeat:
Stewart’s photo didn’t make it into any advertising that we have located, but Hope’s did:
Hope’s opening monologue was newly recorded for this program, but the Stewart sketch and some of the songs had been used in previous shows. The skit with Hope, Stewart and Margaret Whiting had been first broadcast on January 28, 1953. The sketch has been somewhat edited, with comments with the words Airwick, Lily Cups, democrats, Lucy and Desi being removed. The final few lines have also been removed. Also, the song in the middle of the sketch has been changed. On the 1953 show, Margaret Whiting sang Keep it a Secret, but this was replaced with Make Yourself Comfortable, sung by Whiting and Hope.
The network broadcast of this show is not in general circulation. However, it is available from the NBC Collection at the Library of Congress. An Armed Forces Radio and Television Services (AFRTS) version of the show does circulate among collectors. All of the American Dairy Association commercials have been edited from this version. They are replaced by a segment in which Hope interviews William B., an audience member.
A complete transcript of the Stewart sketch was included in Jimmy Stewart on the Air. If you have the book, you can follow along with the AFRTS version below to spot all the differences.
