As outlined in Jimmy Stewart on the Air, Mr. Stewart appeared on program #23 of the U.S. Treasury Department’s public service program, Guest Star. Win Elliot was the show’s host; Mary Small is vocalist and Denes Agay the orchestra leader.
At the time the book was published, the date of the program was in question. Since stations ran the show when they wanted, there was no specified date or time for the broadcast. Also, radio listings often did not include the program or, if they did, it was usually just the title and not the guest’s name.
Now, we have located several newspaper listings for this program. They are all from late August through early September of 1947. The first is from the Sunday Register, Beckley, WV, and it appeared on August 31, 1947:
The second is from the September 4th edition of The Bend Bulletin, Bend, OR.
The final mention is in this ad from the September 5th edition of The Burlington Free Press, Burlington, VT.
We also did not include a photo of the 16-inch transcription disc’s label in the book, but include one here:
Stewart is heard twice on the program, both times to help sell U.S. Savings Bonds:
