Madame X – Lux Radio Theatre

Lux Radio Theatre had already been a top CBS radio program for two years when Jimmy Stewart made the first of his thirteen appearances on June 14, 1937. What follows is an update of that first appearance in the play, Madame X. Jimmy’s co-stars were Ann Harding and Conrad Tearle. During this time period, Cecil B. DeMille was the show’s host. The hour long show also usually had a special intermission guest. This week it was Richard Mear and his mother, a real-life Madame X.

As were many of the shows, this one was given a display ad in newspapers around the country like this one:

Stewart’s hometown newspaper, The Indiana Progress, Indiana, PA, carried this small article on June 9, 1937:

As usual, the play was presented in three acts:

Act 1:

Act 2:

Act 3:

The following photo shows Stewart, Ann Harding and Cecil B. DeMille at the CBS microphone.

Even though this was the only Lux program he had appeared in thus far, Stewart’s name was included in the Lux Radio Theatre front page “Thank You, Hollywood” edition of Variety magazine (January 5, 1938). Stewart’s name can be seen just above the “d’ in the word Hollywood.
