There is some doubt as to the actual date of this broadcast. In his book, James Stewart a Bio-Bibliography, Gerald Molyneaux lists Stewart as having appeared on “Sus and Ohrbach’s Hi Jinx” on March 28, 1948. Hi Jinx was being sponsored at the time by Schonbrunn and Ohrbach’s which may account in part for this listing. The New York Times radio listings carried the following that day:
There was no mention of Stewart being a guest. Nor has our research, thus far, turned up any such mention for this date.
An article from the March 31, 1948, edition of Variety give the date as March 29th. It also gives some details on Stewart’s appearance.
A photo of Stewart and Brock Pemberton appearing with Tex and Jinx on WNBC also exists. The photo is dated March 31, 1948.
Pemberton was the director of Harvey, the play in which Stewart was currently starring on Broadway and it would have been very plausible for them to appear on the program together. In fact, they have been confirmed to have appeared together on The Martha Deane Show on April 1, 1948. But, just like the 28th, all the listings found for the 31st simply say “Hi Jinx” or “Hi Jinx, interviews,” and do not list any guests.
Though we can be fairly sure that Stewart appeared on the program during this week, we have been unable to pin down the exact date.
