As discussed in Jimmy Stewart on the Air, the Betty Crocker radio show was on the air for 29 years. Several women, including Zella Layne, Betty Bucholz and Adelaide Hawley, played the role of Betty Crocker on the program through the years. At the time our book was published, we had only been able to document one appearance of Stewart on the program; that being on the show broadcast on February 25, 1952. Now, we can add a second show. Hawley had the role of Crocker at this point and would have been the hostess for this appearance by Jimmy.
This small listing appeared in the Wisconsin State Journal, Madison, WI on August 24, 1951.
On the same day, this listing was found in the Washington Post, Washington, DC.
No mention was made of the show’s title, but in checking the box listings for that day, we can see that the 10:30 program was Betty Crocker.
The Greatest Show on Earth would not be premiered in the U.S. until January 10, 1952, a date still several months away at this time, but obviously not too far in the future to begin promoting it.
Unfortunately, this show is not available.
Update: February 28, 2108
Finding a listing for the Betty Crocker Show is quite easy. However, find one that also gives the guest stars’ name is very difficult. Here’s one we just recently found in the Arizona Daily Star, Tucson, AZ.
