Pot O’ Gold – Soundtrack

Although there was officially no soundtrack album for this 1941 Jimmy Stewart-Paulette Goddard-Horace Heidt film, all of the songs were recorded and released as four separate 10-inch 78 RPM records by Horace Heidt and his Musical Knights.

The songs appearing in the film were:

Hi, Cy, What’s a Cookin’ (Henry Russell/Louis Forbes) performed by various characters in the film
Pete the Piper (Henry Russell) – performed by Paulette Goddard with vocals dubbed by Vera Vann
When Johnny Toots His Horn (Hy Heath/Fred Rose) performed by Jimmy Stewart
A Knife, a Fork and a Spoon (Dave Franklin) performed by Horace Heidt and his Musical Knights
Do You Believe in Fairy Tales? (Vee Lawnhurst/Mack David) performed by Larry Cotton with Horace Heidt and his Musical Knights
Broadway Caballero (Henry Rusell) performed by Paulette Goddard (vocals dubbed by Vera Vann) with Horace Heidt and his Musical Knights

The songs were a very integral part of the film and appeared in much of the advertising and previews. Here is a news article from the Brooklyn Eagle, published March 29, 1941:

The Heidt recordings even rated a story. This one is from the March 12, 1941, edition of The Daily Republican, Belvidere, IL:

The first of the recordings to be issued was Broadway Caballero (Columbia 36006) which was released on January 14, 1941.

The Jimmy Stewart version of When Johnny Toots His Horn and Paulette Goddard’s (Vera Vann) version of Pete the Piper are included on the CD, Did You Know These Stars Also Sang? See separate blog for information on this release.

We recently added this “Advance Artist Copy” of the sheet music for Do You Believe in Fairy Tales? to our collection.

(Update, January 11, 2018)

We recently added the sheet music for Do You Believe in Fairy Tales to our collection. This one features a cover photo which is very much different from the one used on other sheet music from the film Pot O’ Gold. In the foreground are the film’s stars – Stewart, Paulette Goddard and Horace Heidt. In the background is Heidt and his orchestra.
